I had a timetable of Freight movements using CC 72000 traction and managed to track down 2 of the 5 x 72000 operating out of Clermont. If your interest is watching & photographing moving trains , then this is a superb spot despite the 'interference' of the catenary posts & wires. First stage was a 3 hour car trip to St Etienne to view the roundhouse - a major disappointment as the roundhouse is no longer used and only Units can be seen in the area. Onward by rail and a short 60 km trip to Lyon Part-Dieu station. Courtesy of the impressive Lyon metro , it was possible to view the massive Vénissieux depot and then the Lyon Mouche depot. A further hour on Part-Dieu station was followed by the return trip to St Etienne and then the drive home stopping off at Clermont Ferrand roundhouse to view 3 of the remaining co-co diesel 72000 class. It was good to see a fair number of BB 25500 locos still performing passenger duties in the Lyon area. Despite their ancient looks , the remaining locos in this class are mainly of mid-70s vintage - mere pups by SNCF standards !! Long day but enjoyable !! Saturday 5 April 2008: A very long day trip !!
